New York CNN —US business leaders are feeling more bullish about the direction of the economy — even as their worries about the upcoming presidential election mount. The survey found 36% of CEOs expect economic conditions to improve in the short term, up significantly from 19% last quarter. In another sign that recession fears are ebbing, just 27% of the CEOs expect economic conditions to worsen over the next six months. However, business leaders are growing concerned about how the political situation could impact their businesses. About one-third (32%) of the CEOs report economic conditions to be better than six months ago, up from just 18% at the end of last year.

More than 260,000 tech employees were laid off in 2023, according to Layoffs.fyi, a site that tracks job cuts across the tech industry. That included workers from Meta, Alphabet, Microsoft and Amazon. Google just announced more cuts this month. “The term ‘rightsizing’ sounds more neutral,” Roger Lee, the creator of Layoffs.fyi, said, adding that the phrase is also used “to convey the fact that these companies did a lot of hiring the past couple years, and now realize, given the current economic reality, it makes sense for the business to go back to a smaller size.”

The research raises critical legal and ethical questions, and many countries, including the US, don’t have laws governing the creation or treatment of synthetic embryos. “Unlike human embryos arising from in vitro fertilization (IVF), where there is an established legal framework, there are currently no clear regulations governing stem cell derived models of human embryos. “I just wish to stress that they are not human embryos,” Zernicka-Goetz said. Right now, the synthetic model human embryos are confined to test tubes. “There is much work to be done to determine the similarities and differences between synthetic embryos and embryos that form from the union of an egg and a sperm.”

CNN —Thursday’s hybrid solar eclipse will last for 62 seconds. That’s the hope for Exmouth and the surrounding Ningaloo Coast in Western Australia, which are hoping that April 20th’s once-in-a-decade natural phenomenon could kick off a tourism boom that lasts well beyond the eclipse. “They’re pretty intimidated but also very excited,” Roger Cook, Deputy Premier of Western Australia state, tells CNN about the residents of Exmouth. And that would be problematic for an economy that is driven by consumer spending. But the savings rate has come down since, in large part due to the high cost of living. The savings rate fell to just 2.3% in October, according to government statistics released last week. By contrast, the savings rate in 2019 averaged nearly 9%, according to Moody’s.
